Marines fired muskets, boarding parties prepared for close combat, and gun crews manned lighter 12-pounders above while the lower gun decks unleashed devastating 24- and 32-pounder cannons capable of tearing through enemy ships. Far below, sailors worked in near darkness around the dangerous powder magazines, carefully supplying ammunition to the guns above.
