Long term agreement (LTA) is changing the AI ecosystem, and OpenAI's "Guaranteed Capacity" or similar enterprise level capacity guarantee plan for B-end (enterprise customers) is essentially a long-term agreement (LTA). It has to be said that long-term agreement (LTA) is changing the AI ecosystem. Previously, LTA started in the upstream supply chain of AI computing power:
1) Storage vendors require downstream chip customers to sign long-term supply agreements to lock in demand before expanding production (this is also the core logic that many investment banks believe can change the valuation method of storage vendors);
2) In order to promote CPO, Nvidia has signed long-term agreements with LIte and COHR to prioritize the supply of key components for lasers and optical interconnects;
3) In order to obtain computing power, large model manufacturers have thrown a large number of long-term computing power agreements to cloud providers;
Now OpenAI is extending the "long-term collaborative capacity" model of upstream supply chain to downstream enterprises.
This is a priority guarantee and discount locking mechanism provided to enterprise customers in the context of AI computing becoming a scarce resource, and the benefits are indeed significant:
1) Solve the bottleneck of computing power and determine for enterprises
By signing a 1-3 year long-term agreement, enterprises can lock in discounted token prices and priority access rights (including GPT series, O-series, Agent and other cutting-edge models).
For enterprise customers, with controllable budgets, lower costs, and no sudden flow restrictions or price increases, it is suitable for large-scale deployment of AI agents, productivity tools, etc.
2) For large model manufacturers
In the past, OpenAI's enterprise revenue mainly relied on ChatGPT Enterprise+API volume based billing. LTA allowed OpenAI to obtain predictable long-term high revenue (similar to LTA in chip factories), helping it plan huge CapEx (capital expenditures) and bind to major customers.
Of course, the core significance is to accelerate the penetration of the B-end and seize the enterprise AI market. OpenAI is vigorously shifting towards the B-end (Frontier platform, Deployment Company, Codex, etc.), and the proportion of enterprise revenue has significantly increased. LTA is a "moat" tool that binds top enterprises to help OpenAI compete against rivals such as Anthropic and Google.
Such a great gameplay and mode, I believe Authropic, Google, and others will quickly follow suit.
It can be said that LTA is a key step in commercializing "scarce computing power", which not only gives enterprises a "reassurance pill", but also locks in long-term cash flow and market dominance for large model manufacturers. This can also be considered an important step towards further "infrastructure based" development of the big model.
