Former core infrastructure engineer from New Jersey, USA, Daniel Rhyne, has been sentenced to 32 months in prison for attacking his former employer's network and demanding Bitcoin ransom. Prosecutors stated that in November 2023, Rhyne deleted admin accounts, changed passwords for hundreds of servers and thousands of workstations, and emailed the company demanding payment of 20 BTC (approximately $750,000 at the time, listed as €700,000 in the indictment) by December 2. He threatened to shut down 40 servers daily for 10 days if the ransom wasn’t paid. The FBI tracked Rhyne through a company laptop and a hidden virtual machine; he pleaded guilty to extortion and intentionally damaging protected computers in April.
