Let’s talk about multi-sig wallets?
We all know it’s most convenient to keep your coins on an exchange, but starting next year, there’s going to be risks with that. If you have a lot of coins, don’t gamble on the platform’s integrity anymore. If you have less than 10 BTC, just buy a Ledger and store them there—it’s enough for most people. Don’t put all your assets on one exchange; spread them out. If you have more than 10 BTC, you absolutely need to set up a multi-sig wallet.
Let me break down what BTC multi-sig is all about.
Multi-sig in one sentence: multiple keys control one address, and you need a certain number of keys to move the funds. For example, with a 2-of-2 setup, you’d have one key on a Ledger and another on a Trezor. Unless both manufacturers collude or a hacker compromises both at the same time, your coins are safe. Still worried? Add a third key and make it 3-of-3 or 2-of-3. Devices like Jade or SeedSigner are good options—you can even buy a cheap board on Taobao for a couple hundred yuan and flash the firmware yourself. No need to buy everything pre-made.
Once you have the keys, you’ll need a wallet to manage them. Sparrow or Specter will do the job—don’t overcomplicate things with too many fancy tools. Generate your seed phrases separately, engrave them on metal plates, and don’t store them on your phone or take screenshots. Also, write down the parameters like the number of signatures and address type—if you lose this info, you won’t be able to recover your funds.
Worried about wallet software acting maliciously? Every signer can verify the address independently. If something doesn’t match, don’t proceed with the transaction. The core idea of multi-sig is: no single party can act maliciously and steal your coins.
For extra privacy, run a full node locally so others can’t see how much you’re holding. You’ll need about 2TB of disk space, but if that’s too much trouble, you can set it up later.
One last thing: don’t put large amounts into a setup like this until you fully understand how it works. Most cases of lost coins in crypto are due to user error, not theft. The BTC system itself has no flaws—if there’s a problem, it’s usually because you didn’t manage your security or privacy properly.
