According to Wu, the Ethereum Foundation and Open Anonymity Project have launched zkAPI, which uses zero-knowledge proofs to separate API usage from payment identity. It’s now live on the Ethereum mainnet. Users can first deposit ETH, USDC, or other amounts into an on-chain Vault, then authorize single or session-based API usage through zero-knowledge proofs. Service providers can verify payment validity without knowing the specific deposit source or payment identity, and the payment layer cannot see the request content.
zkAPI supports generating short-term, limited API Keys for compatible interfaces like OpenAI and Ollama, with billing based on actual usage. Funds are managed by smart contracts, and users can withdraw and extract funds on-chain at any time.
This solution is currently focused on AI inference but can also be extended to RPC, image generation, VPN, and machine-to-machine services. However, it cannot hide risks related to IP, request timing, or identity links from prompt content itself.
