[Anthropic Releases Metrics to Assess AI Development Speed, Tracking Frontier Lab Model R&D Progress]
According to a report by Jinse Finance, on September 18, Anthropic released a metrics system aimed at 'measuring the speed of AI development at frontier labs,' with the goal of providing the public with better tools to understand the progress of AI model research and development. Anthropic stated that society needs more information to evaluate the pace of frontier AI advancements.
The metrics system focuses on three main aspects: the extent to which AI participates in the development of next-generation AI, the ability to supervise the behavior of AI agents, and the allocation of resources to drive the development of more powerful models. Among these, Anthropic has established an 'AI R&D Automation Index' to measure the proportion of Claude's involvement in the company's AI R&D efforts.
As of August 2026, Claude has not achieved fully autonomous R&D within any measured scope but has 'led' approximately 26% of Anthropic's AI R&D work. Over 90% of the R&D efforts have reached the level of 'AI collaboration' or higher.
