[WTO: Decentralized Regulation Limits Stablecoin Application in International Finance]
Odaily Planet Daily News - Juan Marchetti, Director of the WTO Trade in Services and Investment Division, stated that the primary factor limiting the adoption of stablecoins in international trade is not technology, but rather insufficient regulation and regulatory framework development. He cited the Financial Stability Board's October 2025 report, which revealed that out of 28 surveyed jurisdictions, only 11 had finalized stablecoin regulatory frameworks, accounting for 39%. Stablecoins currently represent only 3% of total international payments but have the potential to address issues such as high costs, low speed, limited access, lack of transparency, and foreign exchange restrictions in trade financing.
