Iran's shrinking oil revenue might be a key reason for escalating attacks on the U.S. Iran's crude oil stored outside the Persian Gulf has dropped from 90 million barrels to 29 million barrels, a reduction of about 68%. Oil revenue accounts for roughly one-third of Iran's national budget, and as this income continues to shrink, the financial and foreign exchange pressures will only grow. This inventory consists of oil previously transported beyond the blockade line, which can still be sold to China. However, the U.S. Navy's blockade makes it difficult to export new crude oil. Now, oil is piling up inside the blockade line, while the oil that can be sold outside is dwindling. Iran can still rely on consuming its inventory to generate revenue, but this situation cannot be sustained indefinitely. So even if international oil prices rise, it may not necessarily help Iran ease its financial strain. The quantity sold is decreasing, and payments are hard to recover. Higher oil prices per barrel don’t necessarily mean more money received. Government spending and imported goods require funds, and with reduced oil revenue, stabilizing the rial exchange rate will become even more challenging. This leads me to believe that the reduction in oil revenue is one of the key reasons behind Iran's recent escalation of attacks on U.S. forces. Iran hopes that by attacking U.S. ships and increasing shipping risks, it can force the U.S. to bear higher military and economic costs, pressuring them to make concessions on the blockade issue. Senior Iranian officials have also mentioned their aim to use inflationary pressures to influence U.S. government decisions ahead of the November midterm elections.
