[Amazon Purchases Large Quantities of Used Books, Scans and Destroys Them for AI Training]
BlockBeats News, August 18: According to a recent investigation, Amazon has been purchasing physical books, removing their bindings, scanning the pages for AI training, and subsequently destroying the original books. The investigation tracked an order of approximately 1,000 books, ultimately discovering that these books were sent to an Amazon warehouse in Las Vegas.
404 Media collaborated with a bookseller who received the order through the second-hand and rare book online trading platform Biblio. They placed an AirTag inside one of the books and tracked it all the way to Amazon's LAS8 warehouse in North Las Vegas. Reportedly, a team within the warehouse, named VGT3, is responsible for scanning the books for AI training purposes.
An Amazon spokesperson told *Inc.*: "Amazon purchases books through commercial channels to help develop and improve the products and services used by our customers."
Amazon has not responded to questions regarding how many books it has purchased, when the project began, which products the scanned content is being used for, or whether the company screens out rare or scarce editions before destroying the books.
