OpenAI's internal ChatGPT has been largely abandoned, and 99.8% of AI output has been taken over by Codex According to Beating Monitoring, OpenAI's economic paper "The Shift to Agenetic AI: Evidence from Codex" reveals the shift in knowledge work patterns by tracking data from the intelligent agent platform Codex. The basic unit of work is shifting from a single conversation to asynchronous delegation of longer and more complex tasks to AI. Within OpenAI, intelligent agents have completely taken over daily work, and the traditional chat interface ChatGPT is close to being abandoned. As of June 2026, 99.8% of the tokens generated by internal employees each week come from Codex. Among them, the proportion of Codex Tokens per engineer is 99%, and the proportion of non-technical employees such as legal and recruitment is also over 85%. Deep use has enabled employees to start running AI like a coordinated team, with nearly 28.6% of employees managing five or more agents simultaneously, and the heaviest employee having a daily cumulative running time of over 71 hours. Compared to OpenAI's extreme state, external users are also accelerating their shift towards intelligent agents. According to a sample of external individual users, the proportion of human work tasks estimated to take over 8 hours to submit has increased from 2.1% to 25.6% within six months. Since August 2025, the number of non development week active users for external individuals and organizations has skyrocketed by 137 times and 189 times, respectively. In addition, the utilization rate of skills centered on reusing workflows among all active Codex users jumped from 5.4% to 26.6% within three months. [Original link]
