A dramatic development has occurred in a New York lawsuit attempting to classify approximately 39,069 dormant Bitcoin wallets, totaling around 3.7996 million BTC, as 'abandoned property.' A wallet that had remained untouched since March 2011, after being named as a defendant and served a lawsuit notice via an on-chain dust transaction, transferred 35.55 BTC (worth about $2.54 million) on June 2. Galaxy Research head Alex Thorn commented that the address is clearly 'not abandoned.' Reports indicate that even if the plaintiff, Noah Doe, secures a default judgment, they would not gain access to the private keys. However, it could create legal encumbrances on the BTC in question, potentially forcing the holder to prove ownership if the funds are moved to a regulated exchange or custody service in the future.
