[European Central Bank Hawkish Executive: The Central Bank Can No Longer Ignore the Inflation Impact of the Iran War]
Jin10 News, June 1 – European Central Bank Executive Board Member Isabel Schnabel stated that as price pressures spread beyond the energy sector and the risk of inflation expectations becoming unanchored rises, the ECB can no longer ignore the inflationary impact brought by the Iran war.
Schnabel said on Monday that disruptions to energy infrastructure and global supply chains have altered price dynamics in a more lasting way, meaning that even if the conflict ends immediately, policymakers may still need to respond.
Schnabel noted that it is too early to determine how many more rate hikes will be necessary, and policymakers will continue to assess upcoming data and developments in the Middle East. She said, 'It is too early to say that rate hikes will end after a certain number. We really need to see what happens next.'
She emphasized that the current shock differs from past energy crises because it increasingly acts as a global demand shock while simultaneously driving up production costs worldwide.
