[Makhlouf: ECB Sticks to 2% Inflation Target, No Comment on June Policy]
Gabriel Makhlouf, a member of the European Central Bank's Governing Council, stated that the ECB is committed to bringing inflation back to its target range but did not comment on whether there would be a rate hike next month. Speaking to reporters in Dublin on Wednesday, he said: 'Our goal must be to achieve the 2% inflation target. To reach this goal, we will take all necessary actions, which is why the market has formed related expectations.'
With only two weeks left until the ECB's next policy meeting, investors and economists widely expect the central bank to raise rates by 25 basis points. Some ECB officials are also inclined toward a rate hike, while others advocate for making decisions based on actual circumstances at each meeting.
Irish Central Bank Governor Makhlouf also supports this stance, stating: 'Ultimately, we will make a judgment based on all the circumstances.' He further noted, 'Any peace agreement involving Iran will be a factor in rate decisions; it is unlikely to clearly indicate a return to pre-war conditions.'
