Italian energy company Alps is partnering with Qurubiqa to restart a 127 MW idle gas-fired power plant in Cochabamba Cercado, Bolivia, transforming it into a Bitcoin mining project. The project abandons the previous model heavily reliant on government gas subsidies, which Bolivian mining companies depended on, and instead adopts a fully dollar-denominated commercial operation. Currently, 27 MW of power has been deployed, with plans to gradually scale up capacity to fully utilize the plant's 127 MW installed capacity. However, with Bolivia's natural gas reserves dwindling, ensuring a sustainable and cost-effective fuel supply will be a key challenge for the long-term profitability of this mining project.
