[Trump Says U.S. and Iran Close to Reaching Peace Agreement, Strait of Hormuz May Reopen]
BlockBeats News, May 25: According to a report by *The New York Times*, U.S. President Trump stated that the U.S. and Iran have 'basically agreed' on a deal, which may include ending conflicts, reopening the Strait of Hormuz, and lifting some sanctions on Iran. However, there are still significant differences in how both sides describe the details of the agreement.
According to multiple Iranian officials, Iran has agreed to a memorandum of understanding that includes halting multi-front conflicts, including those involving Lebanon, resuming commercial navigation through the Strait of Hormuz without charging transit fees, the U.S. lifting its maritime blockade on Iran, and the release of approximately $25 billion in frozen Iranian overseas assets.
U.S. officials, on the other hand, stated that a key element of the agreement is Iran's conditional agreement to relinquish its stockpile of highly enriched uranium, though the specific handling of this issue will be addressed in subsequent nuclear negotiations. Iranian representatives indicated that nuclear-related discussions will continue over the next 30 to 60 days.
The report noted that since the U.S. and Israel launched strikes against Iran in February this year, the Strait of Hormuz has been largely obstructed, putting sustained pressure on the global energy market. Currently, around 1,500 vessels are stranded near the Persian Gulf, and even if the agreement is officially implemented, it could take weeks or even months for shipping to return to normal.
Additionally, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu has had multiple phone calls with Trump. Countries such as the U.S., Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE, and Pakistan have also recently participated in related mediation efforts. Some hawkish members of the U.S. Republican Party have expressed concerns about the agreement, arguing that allowing Iran to retain nuclear capabilities would be a 'catastrophic mistake.'
