Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin experienced a sandwich attack by the well-known MEV bot 'jaredfromsubway.eth' during a $4 XDB-to-ETH swap on April 30. On-chain data shows that the bot used approximately $1.14 million in WETH to front-run the transaction on SushiSwap and Uniswap V2, buying in advance and selling afterward to manipulate the execution price. Although this operation seemingly resulted in a loss after deducting gas fees and only impacted Buterin's slippage by a few cents, the incident highlights how advanced these MEV bots have become, scanning nearly all pending transactions in the public mempool. Reports indicate that Buterin has recently been advocating for solutions like encrypted mempools to mitigate toxic MEV issues on the Ethereum network.
