[Amazon Acquires Satellite Company for Over $10 Billion, Directly Competing with Starlink]
According to a report by Golden Finance, on April 15, Amazon (AMZN.O) acquired satellite operator Globalstar (GSAT.O) for $11.6 billion, intensifying its competition with Musk's Starlink in the satellite communications sector. The market size is expected to double to $200 billion in the coming years. Amazon announced plans to launch a direct-to-mobile satellite service by 2028, providing connectivity directly to people's mobile devices as an alternative to traditional cellular base stations.
For years, the e-commerce giant has been attempting to enter the satellite services field to seek new growth opportunities beyond its massive retail and cloud computing businesses. On Tuesday, Amazon also stated that Apple's (AAPL.O) emergency messaging service would transition to Amazon Leo, the company's recently renamed broadband satellite network. Securing Apple as a client is a significant victory for Leo, which has previously lagged behind SpaceX's Starlink division in signing major partners such as airlines.
