The relationship between Apple and OpenAI is tense, with the latter planning to resort to legal action
According to sources familiar with the matter, on May 15th, the two-year partnership between Apple Inc. (AAPL. O) and OpenAI has become tense as the AI startup failed to generate expected returns from its deal with Apple and is currently preparing for potential legal action. OpenAI's lawyers are actively collaborating with an external law firm to explore a range of options that may be formally implemented in the near future. According to informed sources, this may include sending a notice of alleged breach to Apple, but not necessarily initiating a comprehensive lawsuit directly from the beginning. OpenAI believes that the collaboration between the two companies to integrate ChatGPT into Apple software should have attracted more users to subscribe to the chatbot. It also expects to further integrate ChatGPT into more Apple applications and occupy a leading position in Siri assistant. However, Apple's use of OpenAI technology in its operating system is still limited, and related features are difficult to find. OpenAI executives believe that as the company focuses on its initial public offering, this design may eventually become a major source of revenue. According to user research conducted by the AI startup described by insiders, the vast majority of Apple customers prefer to use the standalone ChatGPT app rather than accessing OpenAI's technology through Siri and other Apple services.
