[OpenAI Releases GPT-5.4 Frontend Design Guide and Codex-Specific Skill: Lower Reasoning Yields Better Designs]
March 21 news: OpenAI has published a developer blog introducing how to use GPT-5.4 to generate high-quality frontend interfaces, while simultaneously open-sourcing the `frontend-skill` for Codex users to install and utilize. The blog reveals three targeted training improvements for GPT-5.4 in the frontend domain:
1. Native integration of image search and image generation tools, enabling the design process to first create mood boards and then select visual assets.
2. Higher completion rates for long tasks, allowing complex games and interactive experiences to be achieved within one to two rounds of dialogue.
3. As OpenAI's first mainline model with native support for Computer Use, it can autonomously inspect rendering results, test across multiple viewports, and verify interactive behaviors in collaboration with Playwright.
The blog proposes a counterintuitive suggestion: for frontend tasks, low to medium reasoning levels often outperform high reasoning levels, as the model becomes more focused and less prone to overthinking. The `frontend-skill` comes with detailed design constraint rules, covering typography, color schemes, animations, card usage limitations, and more, guiding the model to produce more restrained and aesthetically pleasing interfaces.
