[UK Parliamentary Committee Calls for Immediate Ban on Political Parties Accepting Cryptocurrency Donations] According to Decrypt, the UK Parliament's Joint Committee on the National Security Strategy has called for an immediate ban on political parties accepting cryptocurrency donations, stating that they pose an 'unnecessary and unacceptable high risk' to the political financial system. The committee recommends enacting a binding prohibition in the Representation of the People Act until stronger safeguards are established. The report also calls for the creation of a new political finance enforcement unit within the National Crime Agency and for stricter rules on overseas donors. Currently, Reform UK is the only major political party accepting cryptocurrency donations. Last year, it received a £12 million donation from an investor linked to Tether, prompting calls for an investigation. Cybersecurity experts have warned that a ban based on KYC requirements could force political parties to centralize personal data storage, creating a 'massive honeypot' for adversaries and introducing new crypto vulnerabilities. The committee acknowledges that crypto tools can obscure the source of funds but argues that current regulations are insufficient, providing too many opportunities to circumvent the rules.
