Ark Invest: One Third of Bitcoin Supply at Risk of Quantum Threat According to a white paper released on Wednesday by Ark Invest and financial services company Unchained, which focuses on Bitcoin, approximately 65.4% of Bitcoin supply is not threatened by quantum computing breakthroughs, but approximately 34.6% of BTC supply still faces risks. This includes approximately 5 million bitcoins (25% of the total supply), which are considered transferable due to address reuse; Another 1.7 million bitcoins (8.6% of the total supply) are believed to have been lost in the P2PK (payment to public key) address, which is the earliest form of transaction script on the Bitcoin blockchain and locks funds directly onto the public key. In addition, due to the address type being P2TR (payment to Taproot), an additional 200000 bitcoins (approximately 1%) are considered eligible for migration. The report points out that if quantum computers can crack Bitcoin's elliptic curve cryptography (ECC), then this supply is vulnerable to quantum theft. Cracking ECC requires approximately 2330 logical qubits and tens of millions to billions of quantum gates.
