[Chairman of the UK National Security Committee Calls for Ban on Cryptocurrency Political Donations to Prevent Foreign Interference in UK Elections]
BlockBeats News, February 25: Matt Western, Chairman of the UK National Security Committee, has called for an urgent temporary ban on cryptocurrency political donations to prevent foreign interference in UK elections.
Matt Western stated that such donations should be suspended until the risks associated with cryptocurrency donations, including thorough verification of funding sources, are addressed. The committee also called for a review of sentencing for election-related offenses, emphasizing the need to strengthen deterrence.
Western has written to Cabinet Minister Steve Reed, who is responsible for election finances, urging immediate action—this follows the omission of provisions restricting cryptocurrency donations in the new election bill.
Earlier this year, the Reform UK party became the first political party to announce its acceptance of digital currency donations. It is believed to have received the first batch of recordable cryptocurrency donations and has established a dedicated crypto portal. In his letter, Western expressed concerns that, given the worsening global security environment, the committee fears that intentions of foreign interference in UK political finances may intensify ahead of the next election.
