I want to address concerns about fiscal incentives. It is true that many years ago, governments could give tax breaks with little transparency, and sometimes the country didn’t get the full benefit. But those days are over. Today, we operate under clear laws. Ministers and Cabinet cannot give special tax breaks on their own. Everything is guided by legislation, like the Large-Scale Pioneer Industries Act. These incentives are published, transparent, and can be scrutinized by Parliament and the public. They are not for one special investor, any company that meets the criteria can benefit. Some projects may have specific requirements, but even then, the rules are strict, and we negotiate carefully to protect the country’s interests. We are not recklessly giving away tax dollars. Everything we do is legal, transparent, and in the interest of Jamaica’s long-term growth.(Andrew Holness)
