Our relief efforts go far beyond what people see online. While I appreciate every organization and citizen distributing food, the reality is that 900,000 Jamaicans were affected and about 40,000 homes were damaged or destroyed. No small group delivering packages can meet that need on its own. This is why we took a strategic national approach. We established logistics hubs and substations to move supplies islandwide, and the JDF and Ministry of Labour and Social Security continue to quietly deliver up to 10,000 relief packages a day. In the coming weeks, the JDF will begin shifting from package delivery to supporting home repairs and rebuilding, using the same logistics system to move building materials into communities. When the history of this disaster is written, Jamaica’s response will compare strongly to many others. It is unfortunate that some try to tear down the work being done, but the results will speak for themselves. My focus remains on relief, recovery, and rebuilding for the Jamaican people.(Andrew Holness)
