[The Bank of Thailand Plans to Tighten Gold Trading Reporting Rules to Address Baht Volatility]
Jin10 News, November 24 – The Bank of Thailand (BoT) plans to tighten reporting requirements for gold trading after increased gold flows caused fluctuations in the baht, prompting policymakers to seek clearer market information.
BoT Governor Sethaput Suthiwartnarueput stated that the central bank is revising relevant regulations to require more detailed reporting on gold transactions, enabling regulators to better understand how cross-border settlements impact the currency. Sethaput said: "Gold is not directly regulated in Thailand, and it is still under discussion who should act as the regulator. If exporters ship gold to Cambodia and settle through cryptocurrency, we have no visibility at all, and I believe this is indeed happening. Therefore, we need to stay closer to the market and see what can be done."
Earlier this year, gold became a focal issue as the BoT identified it as one of the factors driving the baht's significant appreciation amid sluggish economic growth. In September, the baht reached a four-year high, weakening the competitiveness of exports and tourism, which together account for approximately 70% of Thailand's GDP.
