According to Bloomberg, the cooling of crypto trading activity has slowed the growth in demand for stablecoins, challenging U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's vision of stablecoins becoming a major new buyer of U.S. Treasuries. In the first half of 2026, USDT supply decreased by nearly $3 billion to around $184 billion, while USDC supply also dropped by about $3 billion to approximately $72 billion during the same period. Tether and Circle disclosed holding about $134 billion and $63 billion, respectively, in U.S. Treasuries and reverse repo assets backed by Treasuries. Bessent previously stated that the roughly $300 billion stablecoin market could grow tenfold by 2030, with the expansion of stablecoins driving increased demand for U.S. short-term Treasuries.
