According to monitoring by Beating, OpenAI's Head of Product Tibo Sottiaux revealed that he had participated in an internal chatbot project called LMChat during his time at Google DeepMind. This project existed roughly a year before ChatGPT's release, and its product form was very similar to what later became ChatGPT. Google ultimately decided not to release it. Sottiaux stated that the company was concerned it would disrupt its existing business, and DeepMind was not allowed to launch products that might threaten Google. He had previously shared this story in an interview with WIRED. [Original Link]
