NVIDIA announced a partnership with South Korea's SK Group to launch an AI collaboration plan with a total investment exceeding $500 billion. The two parties will engage in long-term cooperation in areas such as AI data centers and next-generation HBM high-bandwidth memory. As part of the plan, SK Telecom will build a 2GW AI data center using NVIDIA's Vera Rubin chips and SK Hynix's HBM4. The first project is expected to go live in 2027.
In the past, NVIDIA purchased HBM through procurement relationships. This time, by establishing a long-term partnership with SK Hynix, the two companies will jointly define the next generation of HBM4. As AI training scales up, no matter how powerful GPUs become, they can't function without HBM. While GPU shortages can be addressed by ramping up production, HBM requires longer construction cycles and more complex packaging processes, making it the real bottleneck. What NVIDIA is doing now is locking in the most critical components for the next few years in advance.
For SK Hynix, this partnership brings certainty. The biggest risk in the AI industry isn't technology but demand. If customers buy today but stop buying tomorrow, companies won't dare to expand production. But now, with NVIDIA directly tying itself to SK Hynix, it's essentially signaling to the market that HBM demand will be real and sustained for years to come. This gives SK Hynix the confidence to increase capital expenditures and further solidify its leading position in the HBM market.
AI competition has already evolved from just GPUs to the entire computing power ecosystem. While many are still focused on GPUs, the real AI competition now involves: GPU + HBM + advanced packaging + data centers + power supply + networking. This 2GW AI data center is the perfect example. NVIDIA is now actively participating in data center construction, chip planning, storage layout, and even ecosystem collaboration. In the future, they won't just be selling a single GPU but an entire AI factory. This aligns with the direction Jensen Huang has been emphasizing all along. The entire industry is transitioning from isolated breakthroughs to systematic construction.
