[Meta, Instagram, and Other Platforms Flagged by Australian Regulators Over Compliance Issues] According to a report by Golden Finance, on March 31, the Australian cybersecurity regulator issued a statement saying it is investigating social platforms such as Meta, Instagram, and Snap for potentially failing to comply with the country's social media ban targeting individuals under the age of 16. The regulator pointed out that there is currently a lack of adequate safeguards to prevent users under 16 from creating new accounts, and some platforms even allow minors to repeatedly attempt the same age verification methods until they pass. In response, the regulator stated that it has multiple enforcement powers, including issuing violation notices, mandatory commitments, publishing public "platform provider notices," and imposing civil penalties of up to AUD 49.5 million. It has already begun collecting evidence in preparation for taking action.
