[U.S. Trade Representative: Tariff Refunds Should Be Distributed to Employees as Bonuses] BlockBeats News, March 13 – U.S. Trade Representative Greer has called on companies seeking to recover nearly $170 billion in tariffs following the Supreme Court's overturning of the tariffs to distribute the refunds to their employees. Greer stated on Friday: 'If I were these companies, the most important and wisest thing to do once they receive this windfall would be to distribute the money as bonuses to their employees.' He added: 'The entire purpose of the tariffs imposed by the President was to drive manufacturing back to the U.S. and correct the massive trade imbalance we’ve had for years. If companies receive this unexpected windfall, they should return the money to their employees through bonuses or pay raises, as that aligns with the original intent of the plan.' It remains unclear whether the federal government has the authority to mandate companies to take such actions. Greer’s remarks highlight the growing complexity of the debate over when and how importers will receive refunds. The tariff revenue is currently held by the U.S. Treasury, and more than 1,000 companies have filed lawsuits seeking to recover the payments they previously made. (Jin10)
