IRAN WAR THREATENS GLOBAL FERTILIZER SUPPLIES
The Iran conflict risks disrupting fertilizer production critical to global food, as the Middle East hosts major plants and raw material exporters.
About 25–35% of these raw materials pass through the Strait of Hormuz, now effectively closed. Iran, the fourth-largest urea exporter, and Saudi Arabia face supply hits, pushing Egyptian urea prices up 33%. Sulphur prices have also surged, with nearly half of global exports from the region.
Attacks on energy infrastructure, like Qatar’s gas cuts, could further threaten fertilizer supply, which CEO Svein Tore Holsether says underpins half of global food production.(*Walter Bloomberg)
