[BlackRock CEO: The Impact of Tokenization on Finance May Rival the Early Internet's Impact on Information]
According to The Block, BlackRock CEO Larry Fink and COO Rob Goldstein stated that tokenization is becoming a transformative force in global markets, with potential impacts comparable to the rise of the early internet. On Monday, the two executives authored an article in *The Economist*, which was simultaneously published on BlackRock's official website. They believe that digital ledgers recording asset ownership can enhance efficiency, transparency, and accessibility, modernizing the financial system. They also wrote, 'Since the invention of double-entry bookkeeping, ledgers have never been this exciting.'
The two executives view tokenization as the next phase of technological transformation. Fink recalled the early days of his career in the 1970s, when trades were conducted over the phone and settlements relied on paper certificates delivered by courier. In 1977, the introduction of SWIFT brought a standardized electronic messaging system for interbank transactions, drastically reducing settlement times from several days to mere minutes. Today, global transactions can even be completed within milliseconds. In 2009, Satoshi Nakamoto first applied blockchain technology to Bitcoin, introducing a shared digital ledger that records transactions without intermediaries, laying the foundation for tokenization and enabling various assets to exist within a single, independently verifiable digital record. Fink and Goldstein also noted that the financial industry initially struggled to grasp its significance, as tokenization was intertwined with the seemingly speculative frenzy surrounding cryptocurrencies. However, in recent years, traditional finance has discovered that tokenization can significantly expand the range of investable assets, going beyond publicly traded stocks and bonds.
