The Ethereum Foundation elaborates on its ZK technology strategy: L1 zkEVM takes the lead and defines a new standard for "real-time proof"
The Ethereum Foundation has announced that it is fully committed to zero knowledge proof (ZK) technology and hopes to deploy L1 zero knowledge Ethereum virtual machine (zkEVM) at all levels of the protocol stack.
The fastest (i.e. achievable within 1 year) and most secure way to deploy is to allow validators to run new clients and perform stateless verification of multiple proofs generated by different zkVMs. These proofs are fast, concise in size, feasible for download verification, and can adopt a deep defense strategy against zkVMs. As long as the protocol provides a pipeline mechanism in Glamsterdam, off chain verification can be implemented first.
Initially, it is expected that a small number of validators will run zero knowledge clients, and the foundation will invest resources to gradually increase their adoption rate. When the majority of stakeholders are willing to operate, the gas limit can be increased to allow validators to verify the proof, which can also be used for zk rollups. This plan can mobilize the entire zkVM industry. To maintain L1 security, the foundation proposes a standardized definition for real-time proof: 99% of the main network blocks are completed within 10 seconds, hardware cost ≤ 100000 US dollars, power consumption ≤ 10kW, proof size ≤ 300KiB, and security ≥ 128 bits. Real time proof "aims to achieve" family proof ", which means that some independent stakers who are currently running validators at home can choose to participate in the proof.
