Hong Kong Customs collaborates with the University of Hong Kong to develop cryptocurrency tracking tools to address the increasing number of money laundering cases related to digital assets. Assistant Commissioner of Customs Mario Wong Ho yin stated that there were 39 major money laundering cases recorded from 2021 to May 2025, of which 7 involved cryptocurrency, including one involving a transaction of HKD 1.8 billion (approximately USD 229 million), and 3 people were arrested. Wong emphasized the complexity of cross-border crime and the need for collaboration between academia and law enforcement agencies.
