Ethereum Pectra Upgrade: Bringing Key Changes
On May 7, 2025, Ethereum welcomed its largest upgrade to date - Pectra. This upgrade has significantly optimized user experience, second layer blockchain, and validator functionality through a series of small-scale improvements.
In terms of user experience, Pectra has implemented batch processing of transactions, eliminating frequent transaction approval pop ups and making operations smoother; Simultaneously supporting the use of any token to pay transaction fees, allowing users to have a more intuitive understanding of transaction costs.
In terms of the second layer of blockchain, Pectra has doubled the number of blob that Ethereum can handle. Based on the blob data storage format introduced by Dencun, this has increased the capacity of the Layer 2 blockchain, allowing transaction fees to be maintained at a relatively reasonable level even during peak usage periods.
The efficiency of the validator has also been improved. Validators can integrate pledged funds and increase the management limit from 32 ETH to 2048 ETH, significantly reducing operating costs.
Despite the many benefits brought by Pectra, the performance of Ethereum cryptocurrency is still inferior to competitors such as Bitcoin and Solana. The new leadership of the Ethereum Foundation has stated that they will focus on improving the price and performance of Ethereum, and the next major upgrade, Fusaka, is expected to be launched in the second half of this year, aiming to enhance the decentralization of blockchain.
