[U.S. Democrats Investigating Meta's Use of Tax Credits for Data Center Construction] BlockBeats News, October 15, according to Politico, U.S. Senate Democrats on tax matters stated on Wednesday that Meta may have misused a commonly utilized corporate tax incentive and requested the company to provide detailed explanations on why it applied for R&D tax credits while constructing data centers. Lawmakers aim to determine whether Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, improperly claimed this tax benefit. The policy was originally intended to support research and experimental technologies, not to subsidize routine business expenses. Previously, The New York Times reported that Meta used this credit to reduce its tax liability by billions of dollars, prompting the issuance of this joint letter. Senate Finance Committee Chair and Oregon Senator Ron Wyden, along with six other Democratic members of the committee, wrote to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, stating: 'The federal R&D tax credit is an effective and necessary tool to support America's innovation economy and cutting-edge research, but subsidizing your construction of AI data centers clearly does not meet this standard.' The lawmakers further noted: 'If Meta attempts to classify its AI data center expansion projects as eligible for R&D tax credits, it could constitute a significant misapplication of federal tax law, warranting further investigation.' The joint letter was signed by Wyden and six other Democratic members of the Senate Finance Committee. One of the signatories, Vermont Senator Peter Welch, also wrote to IRS Commissioner Frank Bisignano last week, requesting the tax agency to provide information on how Meta and other large tech companies are utilizing R&D tax credits.
