[The U.S. Considers Easing Sanctions on Shadow Fleet to Lower Shipping Rates]
According to a report by Jinse Finance, on October 15, a U.S. official stated on Wednesday local time that the Trump administration is considering easing sanctions on vessels belonging to the so-called "shadow fleet." These vessels have previously transported oil and petroleum products from countries such as Russia, Iran, and Venezuela. The move aims to reduce global shipping rates, which are currently at historic highs.
Not long ago, U.S. President Trump temporarily lifted sanctions on Russian diesel, a decision that drew strong criticism from Ukrainian President Zelensky, multiple European governments, and some Republican senators within Trump's own party.
The U.S. official revealed that current discussions are focused on whether the U.S. will allow previously sanctioned vessels to transport "legitimate oil." "Legitimate oil" refers to crude oil or petroleum products not subject to U.S. sanctions, rather than oil from Russia or Iran restricted by sanctions. The official stated that the measure is intended to facilitate the export of more refined oil and crude oil from the Gulf region. (Jin10)
