On October 6th, the US military destroyed a vessel linked to Iran that was monitoring and targeting US Navy ships in the Gulf of Oman. The crew was safely evacuated before the vessel was destroyed.
In the past 48 hours, at least five oil tankers have been directly or indirectly attacked by Iran in the Strait of Hormuz, causing oil prices to continue rising. Now the US has started retaliating with force, but comparatively, the cost of Iran's attacks remains very low.
Even a tit-for-tat approach is not cost-effective for the US, but they don't have a better option. Especially with the midterm elections just 20 days away, US oil prices remain stubbornly high. While Trump might say it's no big deal, he's probably feeling the pressure.
Even after the midterms, there's no guarantee that oil prices will start to drop.
