Bitcoin becomes supplementary collateral for bank loans, giving businesses holding crypto another financing option Jeonbuk Bank in South Korea has issued a corporate loan using Bitcoin as supplementary collateral. According to local media reports, the bank has included bitcoin:native in the collateral scope on top of the company’s credit loan, increasing the loan amount. The company receives Korean won for operational turnover, while Bitcoin is handed over to third-party custody. When I talked about BTCFi before, I mentioned a very practical need: Bitcoin holders need funds but don’t want to sell their Bitcoin. The same goes for businesses—they see long-term value and want to keep holding, but they need cash for payroll and supplier payments. If holdings can help businesses secure bank loans, they can solve cash flow issues while keeping their Bitcoin, reducing the need to sell due to short-term financial pressures. The premise is that the business meets the bank’s credit review requirements and has the ability to pay interest and repay the loan. For banks, accepting Bitcoin as collateral requires proper arrangements for valuation, custody, and default handling. Jeonbuk Bank has already established a valuation system referencing prices from multiple exchanges and conducted stress tests for scenarios where prices drop significantly. If a company defaults, the loan structure includes procedures for liquidation and loan recovery through court enforcement. Only when banks are willing to set up these mechanisms can Bitcoin truly participate in corporate financing. Currently, this is still a pilot corporate loan, and public reports have not disclosed full details like interest rates or collateral ratios. But for businesses holding Bitcoin, this case already demonstrates a use case: Bitcoin on the books can help secure more operational funds. If more traditional banks gradually accept such arrangements, businesses can factor financing purposes into their decision to hold Bitcoin long-term, giving them another reason to retain this asset.
