Bank earnings call highlights:
CONSUMER HEALTH & RESILIENCE
C – "In the US, whilst much has been made of the AI boom, the consumer is still driving much of the growth, the labor market is stable, and companies remain active."
JPM – "… the consumer has been quite resilient in the face of a number of headwinds that under different circumstances you might have expected would present a challenge."
WFC – "The consumer remains one of the economy's most important sources of resilience though higher prices continue to weigh on consumer sentiment."
WFC – "High income households continue to benefit from strong asset prices, substantial home equity and stable labor income. And while lower income households remain more sensitive to financing costs, inflation and higher living and fuel expenses, they appear to be stable."
WFC – "And as long as the economy continues to grow and employment stays strong, that should continue. And we're just not seeing signs of that changing at this point, either from the way our -- the sentiment across our commercial client base or just in the actual metrics that we're seeing on the consumer side."
CONSUMER SPENDING
C – "Spend volume up 13% and average loans up 9%, both partially offset by declines in private label cards."
JPM – "A few points to highlight debit and credit spend grew 10% year-on-year with continued momentum across lending categories, including gas and travel supported by consumer demand."
CREDIT QUALITY
C – "… And we continue to see strong consumer credit performance as both net credit loss and delinquency rates in our overall cards portfolio declined year over year."
WFC – "At the same time, consumer credit remains strong with our charge-off ratio down from both the second quarter and a year ago, and early-stage delinquencies at historically low levels."
JPM – "Finally, we continue to expect the card net charge-off rate to be approximately 3.2%."
C – "And in the quarter, corporate non-accrual loans as well as corporate net credit losses remained low."
AI INVESTMENT
C – "This year alone, we are seeing the financial benefits from AI and automation significantly outweigh the investments we have made year-to-date…"
