Got curious and looked up the Samsung 1TB SSD I bought a few years ago.
Back in June 2023, I got it for ¥459. Today, the same model is selling for ¥1269.
The price is nearly 3x what it was.
Then I checked the timeline of GPT releases and realized that this was around the transition phase from GPT-4 to GPT-4o.
Pretty much, you could say that after GPT-4 was released, global demand for AI computing power entered an explosive growth phase. This triggered a terrifying AI-driven consumption of hardware, which in turn caused a massive price surge in AI-related chips, storage, and more.
This directly broke the decades-long Moore's Law in the computer hardware industry:
The performance of components doubles every 18 months, while the price halves.
Someone mentioned before that monitor prices hadn’t really gone up, and at the time, I replied:
That’s because AI doesn’t need monitors.
But just now, Gemini replied: Due to the current chip shortage, even monitor prices might start going up.
Let’s all be realistic here—carbon-based lifeforms shouldn’t compete with silicon-based lifeforms for resources. You won’t win.
