[Ledger Hardware Implant Incident Sparks Controversy, Related Losses May Exceed $86 Million, Plan B Says Moving to Bitcoin ETF Was 'Zero Regret']
Odaily Planet Daily News: Hardware wallet manufacturer Ledger has been found to contain unauthorized hardware implants, with some blockchain investigators estimating that the losses caused by these implants may exceed $86 million. This incident has reignited industry discussions about the security of self-custody Bitcoin via hardware wallets versus custody through exchange-traded funds (ETFs). Bitcoin analyst Plan B stated that their decision to transfer Bitcoin holdings into an ETF by 2025 has been validated following recent vulnerabilities exposed in Coldcard and Ledger, and commented that it was done with 'zero regret.'
Ophelia Snyder, co-founder of 21Shares, noted that large holders have been transferring self-custodied assets into ETFs for years to achieve higher security. Blockstream CEO and Hashcash inventor Adam Back remarked that hardware wallets can still serve as a secure method of asset custody, but vendors need to improve their modeling of emerging threats. Snyder pointed out that the security of self-custody depends on the technical skills and setup of the investor. Bitcoin security researcher Jameson Lopp stated that self-custody remains robust but warned against hasty migrations that could create new points of centralization failure. (Cointelegraph)
