Recently had a chat with friends in Singapore about this: Will quantum computing threaten BTC? He said that in the next 5–10 years, if ECDSA really has the potential to be cracked, the first thing the market might target would be those early BTC addresses from Satoshi’s era. This is also why I’ve been following @1096361BTC lately. The MBTC project isn’t about cracking Satoshi’s wallet today, but rather turning a distant, highly technical issue into a narrative that the crypto community can understand. 1,096,361 BTC. That number alone is scary enough. It represents the BTC that has been dormant since Satoshi’s era, and it’s also one of the most sensitive assets in the entire crypto market. In the past, the topic of quantum threats was mostly discussed by developers and cryptography circles—ordinary users didn’t really feel it. But MBTC has turned it into a community mission and a viral topic, making more people start to think about one question: If quantum computing really breaks through in the future, what happens to those early BTC addresses? What happens to exchange cold wallets? Does the industry have a migration plan? This issue isn’t far from Binance or BNB Chain. Back in May this year, BNB Chain already tested replacing ECDSA with post-quantum signatures. The test showed that migration is possible, but the data size of a single transaction increased by over 20 times, and throughput dropped by 40% to 50%. I think this is where its value lies. It’s not about creating panic or saying BTC will be unsafe tomorrow, but about putting BTC’s biggest long-term security question in front of the market early. Binance holds a large amount of user assets, and BNB Chain is already testing post-quantum solutions in advance. Security at the foundational level isn’t just about whether something will go wrong today—it’s also about how exchanges, chains, and users will transition together when the day for migration actually comes. MBTC isn’t about whether something can be cracked today, but whether the market will start pricing in BTC’s ultimate security narrative. Honestly, I’m curious too—will BTC really be cracked by quantum computing in the future? BNB Chain has already done post-quantum testing, so will Binance prepare a migration plan for BTC cold wallets in advance? Any experts out there who can shed some light on this? @cz_binance @heyibinance
