[ASIC Proposes Extending CFD Investor Protections to Crypto Asset-Settled Derivatives]
Odaily Planet Daily News: The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) plans to expand the rules for Contracts for Difference (CFDs) to include derivatives settled via digital asset transfers that meet certain conditions. These products will be subject to leverage limits, mandatory close-out, and negative balance protection, with the exception of certain cryptocurrency futures and options with fixed expiration dates. ASIC is seeking feedback from the industry and stakeholders on the proposed amendments, with a deadline of November 9. Australia's current CFD regulatory framework, introduced in 2021, requires service providers to close out positions when account funds fall below a specified level, and negative balance protection limits client losses to the funds in their CFD accounts. In April, Australia passed legislation to include cryptocurrency exchanges and tokenized custody platforms under the financial services licensing framework, with the new system set to take effect on April 9, 2027.
