[South Korea Central Bank Governor: Interest Rate Policy Primarily Focuses on Inflation Trends]
Odaily Planet Daily News – South Korea Central Bank Governor Rhee Chang-yong stated on the 12th that 'the most important factor in monetary policy decisions is inflation trends.' On the same day, Rhee made this remark during the National Assembly's Finance and Economy Committee audit meeting held at the central bank's headquarters in Jung-gu, Seoul, in response to a question about whether the central bank would raise interest rates again in October or November.
Rhee emphasized that the central bank is particularly concerned about the greater impact inflation pressures have on low-income groups and economically vulnerable populations. He said, 'One point we particularly stress is that due to inflation, low-income and disadvantaged groups suffer the most damage.'
He also pointed out that vulnerable borrowers (disadvantaged borrowing groups) affected by high interest rates would feel pressure from the central bank's monetary policy. Market interpretations suggest that the South Korea Central Bank will continue to seek a balance between controlling inflation and alleviating the pressure high interest rates impose on households and businesses when considering its interest rate path.
