Basent cuts Treasury auction sizes, replacing the gap with short-term Treasury bills (T-bills). By artificially reducing the supply of long-term bonds, it directly compresses the Term Premium and pushes up long bond prices, thereby lowering the yields on 10- to 30-year U.S. Treasuries.
The core funding pool for short-term debt in the earlier phase—Fed's Overnight Reverse Repo (ON RRP)—has already been depleted to low levels. The subsequent issuance of T-bills directly consumes bank reserves, making it highly likely to trigger a liquidity crisis in the money market. The toolbox for replacing long-term debt with short-term options is running low. Swapping long for short will also more quickly reverse and push up the fiscal net interest deficit, like drinking poison to quench thirst.
So, not only will this have no long-term impact on U.S. Treasury trends, but it also artificially creates a rare opportunity for Treasury traders.
