Many giants started as something else. Don’t be afraid to pivot: 1/ Twitter started as Odeo, a podcasting platform. Apple moved into podcasts, and the team built a side project, a status-update service, that became Twitter. 2/ Slack started as a video game called Glitch. The game flopped, so the team turned its internal chat tool into Slack. 3/ Instagram started as Burbn, a cluttered check-in app. The founders kept only the photo sharing and renamed it. 4/ YouTube started as a video dating site called "Tune In Hook Up." Almost nobody used it for dating, so it became open video sharing. 5/ Shopify started as Snowdevil, an online snowboard shop. The founders built their own store software and then sold that instead.
