This scandal just keeps getting bigger. Accusations are flying that the Bitcoin hardware wallet distributor CryptoBillis, allegedly selling wallets with embedded spy chips, transferred the company earlier this year to a Chinese guy named JIA MING, who is reportedly based in Wuchang City, Heilongjiang.
At the same time, Karpelès, who lives in Tokyo, bought a Ledger cryptocurrency hardware wallet from a Chinese seller on Amazon Japan.
After dismantling the hardware, it was discovered that the wallet contained LTE, eSIM, and an antenna, which could remotely read users' Bitcoin and Ethereum mnemonic seed phrases and private keys. Essentially, when users store cryptocurrency in the wallet, the spy chip intercepts the screen content displaying the mnemonic seed and transmits it externally, allowing the private keys to be stolen and the cryptocurrency transferred.
Currently, the estimated losses from theft have exceeded $86 million, involving hundreds of wallets containing Bitcoin, Ethereum, and more. Since many devices with embedded spy chips are still being activated and used to store cryptocurrency, the losses could continue to grow.
