[Former Mt. Gox CEO Claims to Have Discovered a Ledger Hardware Wallet with Spyware Module Capable of Sending Mnemonic Information via LTE] BlockBeats News, October 10: Former Mt. Gox CEO Mark Karpelès disclosed in a post that a Ledger hardware wallet he received appeared to have been implanted with a spyware module. The device originated from Malaysia, with its outer shrink-wrap packaging intact, and no abnormalities were immediately noticeable upon unboxing. The implant was concealed in the space where the screen's original buffer pad should have been. Karpelès further explained that the module contained an LTE communication component, antenna, eSIM, and a microcontroller connected to the Ledger SPI bus. It could analyze the characters displayed to the user on the device and transmit related data after the mnemonic setup was completed. The attacker could then monitor the victim's wallet address and choose the right moment to transfer assets. He advised users to inspect their devices following Ledger's official guidelines.
