Cases of kidnapping, detention, extortion, threats, and violent theft related to crypto assets have significantly increased in France. Data provided by the French Ministry of the Interior to Cointelegraph shows that from January 1 to mid-August 2026, a total of 90 such cases were recorded, averaging about one every two and a half days. Between January and July, 223 people were arrested, and 126 were imprisoned. Since France only began tracking these incidents using this metric in 2026, there is currently no directly comparable data for 2025. Chainalysis researchers believe that the surge in cases may be partially linked to personal information leaks, including exposure of addresses, financial details, and crypto asset holdings, making it easier for criminals to target victims.
